How to Open a US Bank Account as a Non-Resident (2026 Guide)
«I need to fly to the US to open the account» is myth number one. The reality: with your LLC and EIN you can do everything online, but there are tricks to get approved on the first try.
What you need before you start
- An LLC formed and active (Articles of Organization).
- A valid EIN (the CP-575 document helps a lot).
- The owner's valid passport.
- A signed Operating Agreement.
- A real mailing address (in most cases it can be foreign).
Options that accept non-residents
Mercury
The favorite of international founders. No monthly fees, a dollar account with ACH and wires, instant virtual cards and a good app. It does not accept residents of every country; Spain and most of Latin America are admitted.
Relay
Very similar to Mercury, with good acceptance of foreign owners and multiple accounts to separate finances. Interesting if Mercury rejects you.
Wise Business
Not a US bank per se, but it gives you US banking details (routing + account number) alongside multi-currency accounts. Perfect as a complement to receive EUR, USD and GBP at very low fees.
Traditional banks
Bank of America, Chase or Wells Fargo usually require physical presence and often an SSN. Rule them out unless you live in the US.
How to pass verification on the first try
- The owner's name on the form must match the passport and the EIN exactly.
- Have the LLC formed at least a few days before applying (do not apply on formation day).
- Answer «no» to any sanctioned-activity questions and describe the business clearly and unambiguously.
- Avoid sensitive words in the description: crypto, gambling, weapons, adult… even if your business is legal.
